- In the Ming Zheng period, early settlers from Fujian and
Guangzhou came to settle Zhuluo County. Some of those
who made the journey lost their lives in this foreign land,
either from failing to acclimate to the new climate or the
spread of disease. These settlers prayed to their gods in
Mainland China, beseeching them to cross the ocean to
Taiwan. Settlers built temples and monasteries for their gods
to ensure their safety and wellbeing. Because the immigrants
from Fujian and Guangzhou were Buddhists or Daoists, the
majority of Chiayi’s temples and monasteries are of these
